🎨 5 Screen-Free Boredom Busters for Kids that Increase Creativity and Self-Resilience

Hello Reader,

What if boredom is actually a gift?

🍹Summer Sips:

When kids feel the “pain” of boredom, their brains get a chance to wonder, imagine, solve problems, and explore.

Unfortunately, screens (and especially pornography) can flood the brain with quick hits of dopamine, making slower real-world activities feel “boring” by comparison.

That’s why unstructured, screen-free time is crucial for kids. It helps children rediscover curiosity, creativity, and the physical world around them.

âś… Summer Tips:

Here are 5 ways to make boredom work for kids in beautiful ways:

  1. Create “no-screen” pockets in each day, especially mornings or afternoons and mealtimes.
  2. Keep simple supplies handy: Paper, markers, paint sets, cardboard boxes, tape, string, weaving loom kits, or sidewalk chalk or simple musical instruments.
  3. Send kids outside with a mission: Find 5 bugs, build a fairy house, make an obstacle course, or collect interesting leaves. Arm them with a handheld digital microscope to look closely at the tiny wonders of nature.
  4. Resist solving boredom too quickly: Encourage them by saying, “I know you’ll think of something–just give your amazing brain some time to imagine!”
  5. Model curiosity yourself: Cook something new, learn how to repair or fix a household item or piece of clothing, take a walk and notice birds, clouds, and sounds together. Plant a garden or sow a few seeds in a pot and observe how they grow day by day–document by taking photos.

A little boredom may be exactly what kids need to wake up their creativity and reconnect with the real world.

P.S. Don't miss this! My interview with Wire Talk was just released. Karen, Erin, and I discuss what's happening in a child's brain after pornography exposure, why these images can become "sticky," and how parents can help prevent repeated viewing from becoming a long-term struggle.
